At the time, I had already been a nurse for several years. I had taken care of patients with diabetes. I had seen the complications — foot ulcers, amputations, kidney failure, dialysis. I knew exactly what uncontrolled blood sugar could do to a person's life.
But I never thought it would be me.
"How are you managing your diabetes?" the doctor asked. I said, "What diabetes?" No one had ever told me.
In that moment, everything I had seen as a nurse came flooding into my mind. And I broke down — not as a nurse, but as a patient. As someone who was suddenly afraid for her future.
I wasn't given real guidance. I was told to check my blood sugar, prescribed medication, and sent on my way. When I saw a nutritionist, I left just as confused. No one explained how to actually take control of my body. My A1C went from around 6… all the way up to 15.
